Ian grew up in Enfield, North London and attended Bishop Stopford’s School. He studied Music at Lancaster University, specialising in conducting. At Lancaster he conducted the University Symphony and Chamber orchestras, Concert Band, Students Orchestra and Chamber Choir as Principal Conductor of the University Choral Society he conducted several large scale concerts most notably Haydn’s ‘Creation’. After graduating he was invited back to conduct the Orchestra and Choral Society in their opening concerts of the new academic year. In 1995 he founded and conducted the Lancaster Contemporary Music Ensemble directing the little performed ‘Machines Agricoles’ by Milhaud at the inaugural concert.


Ian returned to London where he took up the post of Director of Music at the church of Ss Peter and Paul, Enfield Lock and subsequently Director of Music at St Michael and All Angels, London Fields. During this time he raised the quality of choral singing at both churches and conducted a number of choral concerts with local choirs. Between 2011 - 2014 Ian directed the Youth Choir at St Clement & St James, Notting Hill.


From 1998 - 2005 Ian worked as Musical Director to a number of Musical Theatre groups across North and East London, including CADOS, Risley MTC and St Monicas Players. During this time he conducted numerous shows at the Millfield, Kenneth More Theatres and the Harlow Playhouse.


In 2007 Ian was appointed to the post of Assistant Conductor of Camden Youth Orchestra, taking over as Principal Conductor in 2010. He has performed with the CYO at St Giles Cripplegate, St Georges Bloomsbury, LSO St Lukes and the Royal Albert Hall as well as venues in Europe. During this time the orchestra has increased in size and now regularly performs some of the most challenging orchestral repertoire from the 19th and 20th centuries.  In July 2010 he worked with the Durham County String Orchestra in collaboration with CYO. He performs with the CYO annually at LSO St Lukes as part of the Camden Music Spring Festival.


Ian has been a tutor and conductor on the National Youth Music Camps (founded by Avril Dankworth) since 2003, working on both Junior and Teenage camps. At the NYMC he conducts the Orchestra and tutors a number of different ensembles including strings, wind and saxophone groups. He has also directed the Jazz and Big Bands as part of the camp programme.


He has been active in education since completing a PGCE at the Institute of Education (University of London) and has worked in the London Boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Havering, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. He has been Head of Music in a number of schools across London and is currently Head of Music at JCoSS in Barnet.

In 2016 he was appointed conductor of the Barnet Band with whom he has performed at venues around North London including Alexandra Palace Park and Stephens House in Finchley.
